How should I prepare for Headshots?

Before your headshot session, think about what type of look you want to capture. An actor uses his or her head shot as a tool when they audition. Knowing this, what roles do you audition for or what roles do you usually play? Do you work mostly in theater, film, or commercials?

Headshots fall into two broad categories, for now, lets call them "Commercial" and "Legit". Commercial shots convey high energy, and talent is often smiling an enthusiastic smile. Legit shots are used primarily for theater and the talent is more focused, intense, and dramatic. Most actors have one of each to show their personality and range.

If you work with an agency, or are trying to get noticed by an agency, it doesn't hurt to call and ask them directly what looks they would like from you.

How should I prepare for my
Senior or Family session?

Think of the location(s) you're wanting to have as back drops to your portraits. Throughout the years I have photographed seniors at many fun locations such as Irvine Park, the Rose Garden, playgounds, client's backyards, rail road tracks, a soccer field, funky alleyways and Summit Ave to name a few.

When selecting your locations, please note that I do not have a portable dressing room. Usually students wear a wardrobe that they can layer, so that changes are minimal. If photographing in my studio, there is a seperate dressing area. Remember, we will be using ambient light (the sun) for many outdoor locations.

If you are wanting more than one location, I ask that travel time between the two be at a minimal (no more than 20 minutes). With a two location session, travel time is included as part of this two hour session.

Can I have an invoice or receipt?

Yes, invoices are available upon request.

What will my session be like?

When you arrive at the studio, we will spend some time looking at your wardrobe and discussing the looks you're wanting to create. You will then consult with the makeup artist and begin hair and makeup. Please arrive with your hair in your preferred style (i.e. straight, curly, wavy).

Once hair and makeup is done, we will begin the session. We will create images that range in expression and emotion and capture the authentic you. I will take as many photos as I can during your session. The number will vary depending on the number of wardrobe and location changes.

Is a makeup artist important?
(can I do my own?)

Makeup is important, and professional hair and make-up services are encouraged. A professional make-up artist will even out skin tone, cover blemishes, and have you looking your best. Remember, your face is the focus of a headshot and the make up artist will bring out your best features.

I get no commission or kickback when a client asks for makeup services, so what you pay for makeup goes entirely to the makeup artist. This is the case with most reputable headshot photographers, and something you can ask about. Some experienced actors want to use their own makeup artist, which is just fine. It is also fine to do your own makeup, but I don't reccomend it unless you have had experience doing your own makeup for camera work.

How should I dress for my session?

Wardrobe is a tool used to compliment your portrait. My advice is to keep your wardrobe simple, and choose pieces that will give you a range of looks. I encourage talent to bring 6-8 tops and I will assist in making the final selections of wardrobe based on the looks we plan to create in the session. I recommend 2 wardrobe changes for a one hour session and 3-4 wardrobe changes for a two hour session.

Other tips:

  • Bring a range of color in wardrobe.
  • I recommend clothing darker than your skin tone.
  • Black is fine, but try to avoid white.
  • Bring clothing that is solid in color.
  • Avoid tops that have logos, stripes, and busy prints.
  • Bring jeans or pants for 3/4 shots.
  • Avoid wearing jewelry.
  • Bring clothing that is form fitting, loose and bulking clothing is not flattering and cause more wrinkles.

Please press your clothes before arriving to your session. We want to avoid as many wrinkles as possible in your images, and there is not an iron in the studio.

Can I bring music?

Absolutely! Bring your favorite CD's to add to the experience.

How do I order my retouched images?

You will notice that each image on your contact sheet has a number directly below it. Just tell me the number below the images you're wanting to order. The images you select will be professionally retouched (fine lines softened, stray hairs removed, blemishes removed, skin tone evened out and brightened). Your retouched images will be put onto a CD, suitable for having bulk prints made (standard 8x10). The CD is comparable to having the film negative of your images.

Do I receive proofs and how long does that take?

Yes! All packages include on-line proofs. On-line proofs willl be posted within days of your session. Having proofs online allows you to easily show friends, family or agents your session's images. Your proofs will remain on my website for 60 days. Please make your order requets within that time. After 60 days I will remove your images from my site.

Can I order my senior yearbook picture first, then order the rest of my prints at a later time?

Yes! It's best to order your yearbook photo three weeks prior to its due date. I can e-mail the image to your yearbook or to you. Whatever you prefer. Ala carte prints can be ordered at the same time or a later date. Please note, I do delete senior files six months after the session date. If seniors are wanting a CD or DVD of all their session images they will be invited to do so before the files are erased.

Can I have a CD of all the session's images?

Digital "negative" files are available for purchase. These are un-retouched high resolution jpg images suitable for making 8x10 prints. Print shops used to working with professional photographers will be able to retouch your images pror to printing them (for a fee of course). See the current price list for cost.

I bought digital negatives
when do i get them?

If you pay with a check, your digital negatives will be mailed to you once your check has cleared. To leave the session with your images use one of the other payment options.
